Frequently asked questions

What exercises help with weight cutting?

During a weight cut, prioritise compound strength movements (squats, deadlifts, pulls) at moderate intensity to preserve lean mass, and low-impact steady-state cardio (cycling, rowing) to maintain a calorie deficit without overtaxing your joints. Avoid high-volume HIIT during the final 2 weeks — it spikes cortisol and accelerates muscle breakdown when you are already in a deficit.

How should I train during a weight cut?

Reduce training volume by 20–30% while keeping intensity close to normal. The goal is to maintain strength and power, not build new capacity. Keep mat sessions as your priority and use gym work as a supplement. Drop accessory isolation work first, keep compound lifts, and cut gym session duration to 35–45 minutes.

How many S&C sessions per week alongside mat training?

For most combat athletes, 2–3 gym sessions per week alongside 3–5 mat sessions is sustainable. Place gym sessions on non-mat days or at least 6 hours apart from mat work. During fight week, reduce to 1–2 light sessions focused on movement quality and activation, not load.
